If you’re planning a holiday trip, then you’ll enjoy it more if you avoid unhealthy pitfalls that would ruin your well-earned relaxation days. Here are some tips you’ll find useful in your upcoming trip.

* Research and “familiarise” yourself with the location (even though you may not have been there before). Find books and websites about the place you are heading out to. Read up on the culture, language, and beliefs (if you are going to a foreign country). Know the tourists spots you can go to. Check, as well, for any special events you can attend such as parades.

* Plan and fix an itinerary. This will help avoid idle time and maximise your holiday trip. You can schedule for a tour of the tourists spots, or schedule ahead an appointment to the spa.
* Visit the doctor and have a complete check up to know if you are fit and healthy to travel as well as to know what you might be limited to doing.
* Take this opportunity to ask if you need any vaccination and/or medication, especially if you are travelling to a developing or an equatorial country.
* See a dentist too. Have your teeth checked for cavities most especially. Body cavities tend to contract in response to air pressure.
* Pack the essentials. Take with you medicines (e.g. pain killer, acetaminophen), a thermometer, and sunscreen. Use sunscreen preferably those with high SPF. For children, the sunscreen must at least have SPF 40.
* Bring insect repellent. Use this often as needed. Buy one that has DEET in its content. For kids, the DEET content must be less than 20%. Do not, however, use insect repellent on infants.
* For those with prescription medicines, keep some in your luggage and some in your hand-carry. In the unfortunate case the airline loses your luggage, you still have some with you. Likewise, keep a list of your required medication as well as the contact information of your doctor so you can easily have them refilled abroad.
* Bring a hand-carry and put some of your clothing and apparel in there. Airlines lose luggage sometimes so it is better to be on the safe side.
* Keep yourself healthy before and during the trip. Eat right and rest well, so you can fully enjoy your holiday.
* Be wary of diarrhea. Drink only from certified factory-sealed beverages. Make sure the children do not get their hands on anything suspicious looking. And for the babies, best to bring your own supply of formula milk you use at home.
* Always keep yourself hydrated. Drink before you feel like drinking. Thirst is a sign of dehydration. When you get dehydrated you lose vitality and your resistance gets low.
* Whilst in the airplane, stretch or move around a little. This will help you remain sharp and prevent your legs and feet from swelling up.
* For those in a long flight, whilst still in the airplane, try adjusting already to the time difference; eat and sleep during the same time as you would when you get there. This will help decrease jetlag and means more time to enjoy your holiday.
* Take care of yourself whilst on your holiday. Continue practicing your healthy habits. Avoid drinking tap water and those with ice cubes. Regularly wash your hands or use antibacterial gel.
* Don’t forget to bring your common sense!
